Does anyone know how this is going to work ? Osborne said that with this new VED from 2017, new cars will pay emissions-based VE - £140 for the vast majority of vehicles.

But I thought that it was already emission-based. I drive a Fiesta, with a 1.4l diesel engine and I pay no VED. So exactly what is going to change from 2017 ?

He's just reduced the number of tax-bands to three to simplify things.

Naomi...yes, that is helpful...thank you.

It looks as if my 1.5 tdi Fiesta has a figure of 98 emissions, so it will be £140 a year, instead of £0, which is what I pay at present.

I am due to change the car in May 2017, probably for the same model, so a clear tax increase, from a Government that prides itself in cutting taxes !
You could always buy a different model.

From the Link

///"There will be no change to VED for existing cars - no one will pay more in tax than they do today for the car they already own."///
That looks like £140 for most cars?

I'm sure mine are about £400 each at the moment.

That's a big tax cut.

Obviously, road maintenance and improvement is not funded from VED, and neither is the NHS, so surely engine size and emissions are not really relevant criteria.
They say, jj, that all the VED will be spent on road maintenance henceforth.
I hope they spend some of it on improving tHe cycle lanes. I cycle most places, and it can be a bit hazardous.

I read that as well. First time money will be ring fenced for road maintenance since the 1930's. That must of been the last time our roads were looked at round here. :-)

I suppose I could buy another model Naomi, but it would have to be one that makes no emissions, in order to pay £0 VED. I may be wrong here but that would seem to leave only daft cars like the Nissan Leaf that will remain free, and what possible use would a car like that be to me, or pretty well anybody else ?

This is clearly a tax increase.
Not a friend of the earth then?
Don't worry about it Jayne, most cyclists are a bit hazardous. :-)

Can't be, produces too much hot air!
;o)

Be lucky you don't have a Labour inspired emission zone on your doorstep. All the artisans around here had to scrap or give away their perfectly good vans and buy new ones that were dictated by Government that fitted their criteria. I wasn't allowed to purchase a diesel powered Defender with soft top unless I paid a charge to enter the zone. The local TA Logistics Corps just within the zone were driving their Defenders with no penalty.
Question Author
No, not particularly Naomi. By the way, what car do you drive ?
Anyone who can afford a new car every 3 years can afford to pay £140pa VED. My heart ain't exactly bleeding, I'm afraid.
A 1.4 diesel Mikey?

Oh dear.
Question Author
Hopkirk...actually its a 1.5l. It goes like stink and I get about 55 mpg.
Sounds good, but personally I won't have an oil burner car.
