I`m just going through a load of documents from my Dad`s death that I need for IHT purposes relating to my Mum`s death. In 2007 in the South West, a funeral cost £1526.70. In 2015 in the South East, it cost £4694. That`s an awful lot of money. I wonder if funeral costs have increased since the advent of pre-paid funeral plans - a bit like the increase in vet fees since pet insurance was invented?

Funeral costs have more than doubled in the last decade and are continuing to rise year on year as rosycider says the main cost is funeral directors fees,of course a funeral can take place without their services and will keep costs down but it takes a lot of planning and running around at a time when one does not exactly feel up to it.A basic funeral with just a graveside service with minister, lair already purchased, and no afterwards costs £3,500 in the north of Scotland, death is really very expensive.Sorry for your loss 237SJ.

Blimey, I`ve just looked again at the price from bringing a body from the local hospial. It`s 4 miles away. In a taxi, that is about £15. If you are dead though, it`s £170
It's not just people on benefits that get a funeral grant. No one is obliged to pay for a funeral. Just don't start arranging it before you let the council know.

I also read that not many bodies are accepted for medical science.

My late husband's cremation cost £4,300. just a plain coffin and only two funeral cars my grandma's funeral 30 years ago cost under £1,000.Same funeral director.
Ummm I am talking about donating your body for medical students to practice dissection on, not for research.
The main reason a body may not be accepted is if there has been a post mortum , or organs have already been removed for transplant. They are not fussy about who they cut up for practice old or young it is all the same to them.
