What is reverse discrimination ?

I thought they created special categories for those groups who would be unable to win a fully open one, don't they ?
This sort of thing is often termed "positive" discrimination, an oxymoron in my opinion.
well but maybe if "society" wants people from ethnic minorities to "engage" and feel like they have a voice, promoting journalists from ethnic minority backgrounds is quite a good idea?
Positive discrimination is inappropriate for job applications but in a competition like this I don't see an issue with it.
Question Author
/// People aged under 30 and from any ethnic minority who have done outstanding work in print, broadcast or online journalism are eligible to
apply. ///

Let's rephrase that shall we, and see if it is still quite acceptable?

*** People aged over 30 and from any white majority who have done outstanding work in print, broadcast or online journalism are eligible to
apply. ***

Best young journalist from an ethnic minority.

So you believe this discriminates against the elderly?

Of course it discriminates against no one. It is a category designed to find the best from a specific grouping. The Best British Rock Group Award does not discriminate against Classical musicians. And the best from an ethnic minority does not discrimate against the ethnic majority.
Exactly AOG......can you imagine the uproar
If anyone wants to launch such a competition then good luck to them. But it seems unlikely because the point of the competition under discussion is to try and provide extra incentive to a group of people who are underrepresented in journalism.
why dont they just say if youre white english dont bother !

AOG,

The award does not specify colour. Anyone from a white minority can apply.
Haha, yeah cleverley worded..... anybody can apply but the vast majority unless theyre called patel or whatever can forget it
There are a myriad of awards each year in all fields - arts/sports/business/beauty etc etc the list goes on.

Each will have their entry criteria , if you feel there is a gap - then set up an award to cover the shortfall.

I am not sure of the full history of the GG2 Awards but am sure their offices would explain them to anyone wishing to know.

The award discriminates against people who aren't journalists
Really ...
Anyway credit to the Mail where it's due as it gets a lot of stick elsewhere largely justifiably
Some good answers here if we run out of steam.

Yep, groundhog day again.

Coming soon: Mobo awards, why no mowo award?
There's nothing like the words ' Ethnic Minority ' to create such feelings on this site is there .

I wonder if it's a representative reflection of feelings throughout the country ; or on other forums
