One of my daughters is a manager at a Hotel/conference centre and has sent me this message;

' This morning I told staff their hours would be shorter today -2 hours later had to tell them no ,their shift was as usual. British workers complaining,making a fuss they have to do a full shift,Polish workers happy to stay and even volunteered to do extra work to cover British workers.

We have had the same experience with British and Polish laborers -the Brits are forever late and always on the phone, E.U. Immigrants work like dogs and grateful for overtime.

I have worked for 7 years as an 'expat' in both Africa and the Middle East. In both places us 'Brits' had a reputation as hard workers. The 'Locals' were regarded as 'Lazy' . I went abroad simply to work and earn money to send home. It is a question of commitment I had nothing else to worry about than earning money to send home, I worked 7 days a week and extra hours to...

No young men sitting about on street corners here
When the unions first started it was a very good thing for British workers, because it moved them away from being classed as slave labour, and gave them a good and safe working environment, along with decent hours for a decent hourly wage.

Now we have an influx of foreign workers who have never enjoyed these conditions and so are content to work longer hours for less pay.

So before you accuse the British worker of being lazy, do you wish for a return to slave labour conditions for all workers, I bet the employers do.
Judging by the number of people on the dole I`d say you are correct - if you really want a job you will always find one. When you do some people think they can get by doing the absolute minimum.

Talbot 'obsessed'? just making an observation and opening up a conversation on AB that's all.

I don't know where some people get the idea that foreign workers get less pay . Most are on minimum wage like the rest of the people they work with and if they are on site they get the same pay as everyone else.
Ive worked with quite a few foreign workers, they usually are excellent workers and all get the same pay. as for myself, I have had two days off this month!
^^ ok, last month!
There are some very hard working car washing poles, about the place
I can see why the agricultural sector needed these people;

Having said that, while looking for images of Pakistani farmers I came across pictures of them planting women in their fields, which is far in advance of British technology.
We only used foreign workers because they were cheaper, no other reason

steg 'used' when? 1950? Women used to get half as much as men doing the same job -things have changed.
Some workers do get paid less. My Vietnamese hairdresser has a chinese friend and she pays her (chinese) staff £2 per hour. Same in a lot of Indian restaurants because the workers are illegals. How else can they afford to stay open all night with no customers?
10 to 8? No we were usually home by then. We had a woman working for us once, she had to leave after a couple weeks cause carrying a spray pack hurt her boobs

237SJ you are comparing Apples and Pears. Of course illegal workers will be paid a pittance. We are talking about legal workers from the EU
yes !!! but make it worth their while , would you work if you didnt have to ?
you just asked another stupid question.
Everhelpfull, I can only assume your council is one of the few that still use direct labor. Our council outsourced the grass-cutting to subcontractors years ago, they' fly 'round the grass now with not a seconds rest. They are on contract to cut a specified area per hour and to do to they have to really race against the clock to avoid a penalty. Dustmen, rubbish tip operators they are all on subcontract now like most other councils. The bin men run round like Olympic athletes in training to get the round done in time.
237SJ Why do you not report the Vietnamese hairdresser? Paying people £2 an hour is pure exploitation. She must be making a huge profit from her workers misfortune. Plus she is committing a serious criminal offence, you ,should tip off the immigration service.
If you have made the effort to come all the way from say, Poland, to earn money for your family, the chances are you will be very motivated.
All the lazy Polish people will be sat at home, just like all the lazy British people :-)

ichkeria -that is a very good point you have made. From personal experience in Canada some young Canadians have very little work ethic as there are so many jobs they can flit from one to another if they get the sack. British workers in Canada are renowned for their good work ethics and timekeeping!
