It's hot in Greece

To stop them hanging themselves
Was there a referendum to decide it?
It is the UK ones that are the people out of step rather than the Greeks.
any reason why anyone should wear a long thin piece of material tied around his neck? It's a rather odd item of clothing. It's hot, as wolf says, though not as hot as it was in London today.

No reason whatsoever
I just wondered if there was a reason why they didn't
long time since I was in Greece but they're not that widely worn. They can't be comfortable in hot weather.
The Guardian reported that Prime Miinister Tsipras would not wear a tie until Greece’s bailout terms were renegotiated...
I'm wondering why folk think they should. Is tie wearing common in Greece ?

To be honest the OP sounded like the lead in to a joke :-)

Why don't Greek politicians wear ties ?
Because ....
...they don't urn enough?...(boom, boom)
svejk - don't give up your day job
;-) Svejk.
I was about to say they can't afford a tie.
You win!!!!!
oz, don't encourage him!
A lot of Europeans countires are simply less hung up about these things. For example, French professionals often wear jeans (expensive ones of course). It's more about your overall presentation than expecting an egg and beer stained tie to denote status.
they wish to differentiate them self from other politicians and banks it simple a statement of being of the people not the city brigade, not so sure its going to work to well butt.
A Greek politician goes into a restaurant, his shirt open at the collar, but is stopped by a doorman who tells him he must wear a necktie to get in.

So the guy goes out to his car and he looks around for a tie and discovers that he just doesn't have one. He sees a set of jumper cables in his boot. In desperation he ties these around his neck, manages to fashion a fairly acceptable looking knot and lets the ends dangle free.

He goes back to the restaurant and the bouncer carefully looks him over for a few minutes and then says, "Well, okay, I guess you can come in -- just don't start anything."
//oz, don't encourage him!//

Why not Mrs. O. He comes out with some brilliant krap sometimes :-)

I love it!!!!!
Wiltsman......Should I groan now?
;-)
ozzy - you can groan all you like, no one will hear you ... lol.

Sorry Ric.ror for diverting attention away from your serious question.
