Jumpers can and have done well in top long distance racing but couldn't match, say Danny's Frankel, for speed over shorter distances.

sorry Svek I would love to share in your laughter but you have lost me off completely.
It may well have gone over your head, it'll be plain enough to everyone else.
divebuddy -I've had horses all my life including a few in racing yards. Believe me I'm anything but 'emotional' when it comes to shooting horses and have had to make that decision for a couple we have owned and its not easy. I was merely making the point that sometimes ,especially when mega bucks are involved, vets can be 'encouraged' to sign the euthanasia form . As for the value of older horses - an older dressage horse 12-18 years old can fetch more than a young 5 year old -you are paying for years and years of training and competing -they are not cars! they do not devalue with age!!
Svek -no I don't think so, I think you are just trying to take attention off your misinformed gaff.

divebuddy, he was rubbish at dressage, he still had worth as a riding horse. Anyway its all conjecture on everyone's part as only the Connections know the real story

You're the only one conjecturing. Hope his extremely wealthy owner doesn't read this.
Red Rum being MURDER backwards was indeed a complete coincidence, although curiously I remember hearing it said that his trainer called him that because of his very 'difficult' temperament.
Really sad to hear this and I'm sure his connections are as well, especially Paul Nicholls who wanted to keep him at his stable
one of the great horses such a shame
Greyhounds get the same treatment when they've finished their racing career. Some of them are lucky and get rehomed.
Like most racehorses, Red Rum gt his name from his sire and dam; sire was QuoRUM and dam was MaRED.
Kauto Star was a very good racehorse. My idea of the best was probably Arkle (as a chaser). He was killed too, retro chic.
Have just read what injuries Kauto Star sustained last Wednesday and was put to sleep on Monday five days later due to complications caused by trying to save a horse. Best decision made by the owners imo. Excellent chaser. But the op asks if flat horses compare. Flat horses are built for speed over shorter distances with no obstacles. National hunt horses are trained differently to run for longer distances over hurdles or fences (chases).
Racing Post tomorrow has a 12 page supplement celebrating his career
Sea Pigeon for me, Arkle was before my time.
