Prnce William referred to Kate as 'The missis' in an interview for Match of the Day. It seems to have gone down badly judging by the Daily Telegraph OP.

It might be a bit old fashioned, but is it a sexist term?

I've just read the article. It's not as entertaining as this thread.

> is it a sexist term?

As long as the Duchess of Cambridge is OK with it, we should be - she was the object of it after all. Not Claire Cohen.
My favourite is 'The long haired General'
Do they actually pay Claire Cohen to write this drivel? It is not as though HRH Prince William called her the "she devil". Not sure what I would call Claire Cohen if I had the misfortune to be shackled to her.
/// It was the moment that reduced an entire nation (well, half of it at least) to a groaning, cringing mass. ///

By that I presume this woman was referring to the female half of the nation, and did she actually get the opinion of 50% of the nation?

/// And that’s before we even mention the ‘see how I can get away with it’ part. ///

Oh yes let's mention that statement, which by it's very wording shows (in William's case at least) who is in the driving seat, and isn't that demeaning to the other 50% of the nation?
I think it's lovely that he called her that ..
My wife(or the missus) used to refer to me as a model husband and then would explain that a model is a small replica of the real thing.
Gromit....I am far from being a Royalist, as regulars on here will know (!)
but is the sky going to fall in and the world come to an end just because one of the Royals uses a common place expression like "the missus" ?

It must be a very slow news day !
Good job he didn't call her his 'treasure'.
If you read between the lines & analyse the phrase ''The Missus''Means The Boss (Or her in charge). Prince William ever the Diplomat.
It probably wasn't the best expression to use, but it's hardly the end of the world either.

Personally, I have never ever referred to my wife as 'the missus'. she has always been My Wife / Mary / Tanya/Kerri/Charlee's mum, or, jokingly among friends - Head Office, which she knows about, and is fine with.

I just think it's a matter of respect to call your partner something appropriate, which means it doesn't start with 'the' for a kick-off.
AOG - //Good job he didn't call her his 'treasure'. //

Indeed - especially since the 1970's comedic standard has it that - "I always call her treasure ... people keep asking me where I dug her up from ..."

Tell your friends, I'm here all week!
To me he was just a bit awkward in picking a word the peasants like Gary Lineker would relate to. Just a gaffe what.
> Head Office

I don't think that would have gone down well ...
Ellipsis - //> Head Office

I don't think that would have gone down well ... //

No, it's not very 'royal' is it?

What about 'the present Duchess ....'?

No, on second thoughts .... !
Head ... gone down ... ?

I'll get my coat ...
cringeworthy.
// Personally, I have never ever referred to my wife as 'the missus'. she has always been My Wife / Mary / Tanya/Kerri/Charlee's mum, or, jokingly among friends - Head Office, which she knows about, and is fine with. //

You only ever call her the 'present Mrs Hughes' on here Andy, which is worse than anything. It insinuates that you are planning to trade her in for a better model at some point in the future.
What a load of fuss about nothing
Has Claire nothing interesting to write about?
I don't see what the problem is, I thought it was a pretty good interview.
C'mon the Villa.
Glass of claret and some blue cheese Tony?
