I have managed to germinate 5 lemon trees from pips
They are about 4 - 5 inches and are on the (sunny) window ledge in my spare room. I have added a plant food plug and water every few days
What else can I do to encourage them

From the website of the Royal Horticultural Society (where they know a thing or two about growing things):

Sounds like you're doing everything you should. Keep an eye out for pests....Citrus are very susceptible to Red Spider Mite, especially if it's hot and sunny. Scale and Mealy Bug can also be a problem.

Good luck
Pot them on into successively larger pots as the trees grow.
Special citrus plant food is easily available in garden centres.
The plants should benefit from going outside in the warm summer months but are not hardy enough to withstand UK winters.

I'm worried about two items
1 red mite - what can I do if I get it or how to protect against it

2 if I pop out in the garden in mid June I'm blighted by slugs and snails even in the kitchen
Spraying the leaves regularly with a fine mist of water, should help to discourage the dreaded red spider mites, spray the undersides too.

Some copper tape around the rims of the pots, may help combat the slug maneuvers.
