it would partly depend on whether there are activities available on or off the train to help break the day up - eg an actual safari, watching animals.
I spent two weeks crossing Russia, but that was broken up with stopovers in places like Novosibirsk. Plus the actual countryside was often fascinating - but then again you could spend all day trundling through a birch forest.

I was caught on the train from Paddington to Swansea once, in late 1989, and it stopped dead in the middle of the Severn Tunnel, and I can honestly say that the whole journey took over 8 hours, and it was the worse 8 hours of my life.
But I also travelled all over Europe on my Interrail travels, as a teenager and they were the happiest holidays I ever had.

Anyway... different trains for different things. South African ones may let you look at animals; Indian ones might too, it depends where you go. Canadian ones take you through the Riockes, which are beautiful, but I'm not sure I'd also spend days chugging across the wheat fields of Alberta. Australian ones will take you across the desert, but that can be a bit samey too.

Jno, after looking at the prices of these tours Swansea is starting toi look like a distinct possibility, I suspect there are a number of animals there so most bases would be covered! Thanks for the link for great rail
