My garden shed has seen better days. This morning I noticed a piece of rotten wood, about 2'x4", near its base had been pulled away. It looks chewed up a bit. I thing it's too big for rats so could a fox be in residence?

It's out foxed me. This question needs ratifying ;-)
Its fairly easy to tell the difference. Rat bitemarks are square and chisel shaped whereas fox bitemarks are more pointed and chaotic.
could a fox squeeze through a four inch gap?

If it is rats I wouldn't want to meet them on a dark night.

It sounds more likely to be a fox rather than rats to me.
I wonder why a fox would be motivated to chew its way into the shed. Is there any food inside?
They do try to get under the shed?

The opening, whatever made it, is under the shed
could it be a badger .

Rats, foxes, and now badgers. The suspects are getting bigger. I hope there are no wild boar around Belfast.
Could be a leprechaun...

Naw. A leprechaun would just have opened the door. It's never locked ☺
