I wonder if anyone can add a location to my memory, of being taken by an aunt and uncle to a 10-pin bowling alley somewhere (?Altrincham?)
They lived in Timperley so I bet it was somewhere driveable from there.

I can still recall the migraine it gave me.

I remember the 10 pin bowling at White City on Chester Rd Stretford on the A 56 near Manchester United football club. The A56 runs from Manchester though Stretford and Altrincham.

Some suggestions here if you could work out which one?

Timperley is only a mile or so from Altrincham, so it was certainly driveable.
Can't confirm if there was a bowling alley there though.
At that time I lived in Cheetham Hill and we had a 10 pin alley there. That was only about 4/5 miles from Timperley.
I can vaguely remember there being a bowling alley in Altrincham in the 70s but can't find any proof yet.
I used to bowl in the Friday league at Belle Vue Bowling Alley, in the late 70s, (which is still there) which is only 8-9miles from Timperley (used to play a lot of football there).
Eve's link shows there was one on Stockport Road in Timperley at the time.
Problem solved !

It was round the corner !

Which one is that alavahalf? The only Stockport Road I can see (quick look though) just says Manchester and there could be a few of those (Longsight for instance).
This articles suggests the Stockport Road one could have been Levenshulme.

Just looked on Googlemaps, 8.2 miles and around 22 minutes (just from the general places names) from Levenshulme to Timperley though obviously as of today. I've not been here long enough to know what the roads and such would have been like round then.

Trying to think of our Manchester people here (though no idea of ages or how long here).

I think Sqad was from round here. Dr Filth (if he is still around), Gromit and one of the ladies too, will try and remember as to who., if you can catch them on another thread as I don't know if they look in history.
Just did a shout out, see who we can round up to help, hope that is ok!
No need to shout Eve!
I've already commented but from what you have recently posted I can say that I suggested Longsight and you Levenshulme. Well all that is is the A6 from Stockport to Manchester leading up to the Apollo theatre. I can't remember a bowling alley along there though.
By the way the cinema in the top left photograph of your link is now one of the biggest Indian restaurants there can be; they have weddings there most weekends and cause chaos to the traffic.
Ahh, is that the Nawaab? Don't go up that way very often but know where you mean, it looks huge! I've seen some of the wedding parties outside.

Is it still going? Remember this from recently, sounds like a large fine on the way if proven!

^ Sorry, 64
Sorry Eve, just been out for a run (shock horror).
Didn't know that about the Nawaab (mind you is it really a surprise?). It is a while since I went past - will try to go past and see.
Hi to all fellow Mancs here :0)
'Ow do Love, ar' thee all reet?

Or Good morning Elina, how are you today?
Morning captain! I don't want to detract from Mosaics thread, but yes & no, I'm busy searching for a field mouse in my house! I am pulling all the furniture out so busy here, just happened to look in & saw this question. Hope you are well captain.
In my teens in the 60's and grew up in Manchester. We went bowling at Stretford bowling alley.

Thanks for some great memory lane answers! The 'bowling alley' cinema at Levenshulme is where my OH got his hair cut as a kid! I've taken all your excellent suggestions into acount and I conclude I visited the White City / Stretford one, on the basis that (to my very young eyes) the roads and buildings in the area looked 'modern' . The road from Manchester to Altrincham was redeveloped in the 1960s and so I feel it fits the bill. Thanks to you all.
