Terrible story. I wonder why he didn't raise the alarm before this, though. He must have had chances while the couple were away working.
lets brush it under the carpet of cultural difference whilst all being made to feel guilty about the minute percentage of British people who were involved/benefitted from the slave trade 150 years ago.
Yes.
minute percentage of British people, Booldawg?

How minute is, er, two people then?
What on earth has slavery 150 years ago got to do with this?

Most of the world has moved on - big time.
I think it was a reference to the guilt trip some like us to be on for things that occurred when such things were thought ok.

As for today, well it is unacceptable and I'll read the article when I have time.

You really think so, just try telling that to the victims of 21st century slavery.
I can see it may be difficult to distinguish a slavery situation from one where someone is given a home and forced to help out; but the newspaper description does sound a lot like slavery to me. I wonder what the legal definition is.

Psychologically it must be difficult to move against the powerful folk you relied on (most of) all your life. They are the only authority you'd have known, and you would be disinclined to anger them. Even if they were away.

This sort of cultural issue is something that must be tackled; although I'm unsure I have many suggestions. It's not just slavery either, it is anything where one culture thinks something is morally ok, when the culture they have moved into believes it is immoral. How does one manage to check for this when accepting immigrants ? Maybe if one knows the culture at the country they originated from, specific attitudes could be investigated somehow.
People should adopt the culture they move into, no exceptions.
