Hi all,

Can anyone give me a link to some free software that will speed up my laptop?

I've got Avast, and it tells me I've got 23 issues that need attending to, but it also wants to charge me. Since I'm potless, it's not an option.

Thanks all in advance.

Is your Avast a previously paid for version that has expired? What type of pc including Windows O/S? Please state the exact wording of the message?

I have a suspicion that you have a 'nasty' on board and I'd suggest you run a scan with Malware bytes free,

Make sure you install the free version and opt out of any extras. Do a scan and follow the prompts. Come back and tell us if you are still having issues.

Don't laugh, but I'm on windows XP and it's a Dell Latitude D600.

If I do the Malware, do I need to uninstall Avast first?
No...you can leave avast for the time being.

OK thanks. I'll do it tomorrow morning.
Do as SlackAlice and ummmm have advised, then report back here.

I did as advised, and the scan ran for 2hrs and 20 minutes, and found 37 errors. Unfortunately, it didn't make it clear if the errors had been deleted or not.
So I un-installed and re-installed Malware and did it again. This time it took almost 3 hours and didn't find any errors, but it ran quite slowly. I un-installed Malware again and it seems fine now, although I'd like to use it all day to see if it is significantly better.
Thanks everybody, you've all been most helpful.
Ccleaner is also good, Ive used it for 10 years + get it here, choose the free one. https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download
I agree with Ratter, used Ccleaner for years, very good.
I also use Eusing Free Registry Cleaner (back up the registry first, just in case). I've never needed to re-install from a back up.
Available here.

Not to sure why you had to keep uninstalling and re-installing Malwarebytes?
If you were not sure of the results, just do a re-scan after making sure the definitions are up to date.
Running Malwarebytes fortnightly should be adequate. If you run it with your pc in 'safe' mode, the scan will be faster. I tend to let my pc do the scan overnight.

What was the answer as regards Avast as per my post?
