'Meliorism'; the belief that the moral and material condition of humanity will improve over time, is this viewpoint in consideration of the events of the 20 and 21st centuries looking a bit dodgy?

In text-world, no one can see what you are pointing at. And HHGTTG is a four-book trilogy (grin) so, to me, the pronoun "that" could only possibly be referring to Kit's book. Hope that explains the confusion.

So… chrome plated head: any CCTV camera you like. ;)

Hypo; I understand your reasoning (I think!). There's no CCTV in the Black Forest, but I hope you can continue to enjoy and appreciate the significance of my sculpture in your mind. :0)
You need to think outside the box (ie outside the Black Forest), K. Plenty of cameras around the planet. If TV illusionists can fool the camera then, no doubt, you can, too.

If you meant the phrase figuratively, rather than literally, then all you have to do is say so. But I took it to mean that your belief system revolves around all of 'reality' being illusory.
