I know nothing of art, especially sculpture, but I have seen a very large alabaster sculpture that caught my eye.

Is alabaster an expensive material?

No, not really, it used to get carved a lot because it was easy to carve, no great value in alabaster itself.

Thanks, Ratter. What is it?
Alabaster is a mineral based upon gypsum, and there are many varieties of it. Some of the items made from it are quite beautiful and sometimes quite expensive. For example, see these:https://images.search.yahoo.com/yhs/search;_ylt=A0LEVi0_cTlVWwkAvkUnnIlQ?p=alabaster+in+clock+cases&fr=yhs-mozilla-003&fr2=piv-web&hspart=mozilla&hsimp=yhs-003
Well, that didn't work did it?:)
Alabaster is a stone, similar to marble, not usually used for large statues though, more for the smaller ornamental products like table lamps and small figurines.
Hi, Ratter; I don't know why it didn't work at first. Alabaster is often confused with marble, granite, or even Belgian slate...It's rather a nice material.

Thanks all. It's nice to know the value of the piece is in the artwork itself and not the material, rather like a painting.

I will start saving my tuppeny bits
Do you have a picture of the sculpture?
Question Author
This is it, but the photo doesn't do it justice

It's amazing what some people can do with a large pebble:) I bet that costs more than 10/6d.

I'd better ditch the coffee jar and use a carboy to save my ds.

I can't find any of her work for sale.
She does some beautiful work, very impressive. Look through her Galleries here....

I've been drooling over them, mamya.
But no prices to be found. I guess it's one of those "If you have to ask the price, you can't afford it." situations:)
Hc4361, regarding your original question, here is one site: http://www.coloradoalabaster.com/alabasterprices.htm
