Why aren't they called 'orthodentists'? (I'm serious).

An orthodontist practices orthodontics - which is from two latin words:

Ortho - to straighten

Odon - tooth.

So you can see it literally means 'straighten tooth'.
My orthodentist is a bender.

Ethel - so why aren't dentists called dontists?
Because we use the word dentist from the French word dentiste, dent = tooth.
so why are orthodentists prononounced 'orthodontists' and dentist pronounced 'dentist'?
