What model no, etc?

If you start it in safe mode do you get the same issues?

If you only have 1Gb ram memory, then that is very low to run Windows and everything else as well and may well be causing your issues. I'd consider 4Gb to be adequate for W7.
You need to check your start up menu to see what programs are starting automatically. Disable those you know you don't need to start working on boot up.

Your machine is underpowered. You can install another 1GB RAM cheaply. Check out the Crucial Memory site and use their system scanner for guidance.
you need to send your laptop at service center because some time device getting problem due to hardware issue also.

blooming computers!! done a system restore yesterday, and everything seems more or less fine. only one problem, the keyboard plays up now and again, eg when typing something, if i dont keep an eye on what i´m typing, the cursor decides to type eleswhere.
You are probably brushing against the touch pad. Try reducing the sensitivity

You do not need to format and reinstall an operating system.

heating isn´t a problem with my laptop, and i never use it in bed, its usually used on a flat surface or on my lap.
Have you looked at your start up menu?

sorry hc4361, why do i need to look at my start up menu?
If you have a lot of programs in your start up menu your machine will take a long time to start up and shut down. Not only that but you will be running programs you don't in that session which will slow the whole thing down.

By disabling programs from starting up automatically you will find your machine starts quicker and runs smoother
Talking of which, is it possible to disable the touchpad whilst using a mouse (windows 8.1)?

Yes, option to do so should be in your users manual.
Thanks, but unfortunately I don't have one!
Should be able to d/load one from your laptop Makers support site.
Some laptops have a button near to the touch-pad to toggle it on/off, some you hold down the Function key (Fn) and press one of the keys on the top row of the keyboard (has a symbol which, with a good imagination, looks like the touch-pad).
With windows 7 you can go to Control Panel > Mouse. Click the "Device settings" tab, choose the touch-pad and "disable".
Do you ever tidy up your pc ....compress data clear cookies etc
Thanks BHG. That's exactly what I wanted to know. Job done. Pity I can't give you Best Answer but it's not my thread
