I'm having well-known difficulty finding my way around Windows 8 on a new laptop.
Somehow it has defaulted to the touchpad - which I never use - and the mouse now won't work. With great difficulty I try to get around the screen with the touchpad but can't find Devices which I assume is where I need to get so as to reverse the situation.

Make & model of laptop, please?
I'm glad it's not only me trying to get to grips with Windows8. Took me ages but all ok now. For your problem, click on the Windows image bottom left of screen & then click on the magnifying glass symbol at the top right hand side. Type in "devices" & it should come up with your mouse info. Click on that & follow it through. hope this helps

Sorry, didn't think it wd be needed.

HP 13-5005U/8/1

I was wondering if you'd switched from a mouse to the touchpad via a key combination that you'd accidentally pressed, rather than within Windows 8. I was hoping to examine the manual to see if such a key combination was mentioned.

Unfortunately, however, i3-5005U/8/1 is the processor within your laptop, not the actual model of your laptop, so I can't take a look. (HP makes several laptops using that processor).

Sorry!
Is there a model no on the back of the laptop, coppit, so Chris can help out.

Or the original box will have the model no on it, if you still have that

It happened to mine recently...simply unplugged it and it worked.

This is where we are now.

The laptop is HP15 - Notebook-PC
15 r217na
Prod No. L30Q91EA#ABU

I unplugged the mouse and reinserted it and the arrow reappeared but did nothing. I tried a brand new mouse and it works fine.

I have found instructions about disabling the touchpad but need to print them out, but as yet the printer is not recognised.

However the laptop is now usable so many thanks for all for your advice.

>>>I tried a brand new mouse and it works fine

It's always worth a try. (I've always got a spare mouse and keyboard handy; they have a nasty habit of packing up at awkward times otherwise!).

>>>I have found instructions about disabling the touchpad but need to print them out

I'm not sure why. Double-tapping the top left hand corner of the touchpad is all that you need to do to turn it on and off.

>>>but as yet the printer is not recognised

Have you installed its driver? Make? Model?
