i believe its similar to couch surfing, and you get to stay in some nice places, quite cheaply.

I have not used it but was recently in India and was chatting to 2 girls who had used it to stay in Mumbai. They said it had all gone great and the apartment they stayed in was excellent.

Only just seen this post - but we have used Air BnB several times in France. One we've used so many times we are on first name terms with the owner - so yes - its good!
