for the last three days I have had a type of "coughing flu" I have coughed day and especially at night so much that my ribs are sore and I am still coughing every few minutes, went to GP yesters he said its not a chest infection its a throat infection and prescribed CLARITHROMYCIN 500 mg X 2 daily and said they will take a couple of days kick in, well so far they have not and interrupted sleep every five mins or so has really made me ever so tired, obviously I have no appetite and I wondered how long this is going to last ? I live alone am a sprightly, always out 76 yr old, but this has beaten me.

Not an uncommon situation I'm afraid and it may well go on for at least another week.

You have antibiotics...........they should do "something."

The latest remedy presented by an Aber is honey and lemon....and that i would have thought is as good as anything for the cough.
Since becoming allergic to penicillin, I've found that I'm on the verge of finishing a course before I start to get relief from alternatives. 2 days would be optimistic to me.

thanks folks at least I am not the only one ! I made a hot toddy last night honey & lemon and a dash of rum ! didn't do much good but tasted nice !
hope you feel better soon xx
I do the honey and lemon drink, but add some ginger as well.
Dee Sa had the same thing a while back - am also 'of a certain age' and it knocked me for six. What really worked though was lots of hot lemon drinks with honey and ginger. Hope you feel better soon.
Dee be careful with the Clarithromycin. They gave me such a bad headache I ended up in A&E.

On the cough though, there was a documentary on last Thursday about over the counter medicines and all the cough mixtures came out as useless. Though the Dr doing the programme tried the old remedy of hot water, lemon juice and honey mixed together, and it worked. He has a machine which induced a cough and the mixture stopped it.

Worth a try. x
I had this earlier this year, so much so that the cough made me fight for breath. Nice GP said they have seen a lot of it this year and he prescribed me a ventolin inhaler (salbutamol) which sorted the struggling the breathe immediately and also over 48 hours greatly reduced the cough. I only needed the ventolin for 3 days and nights. GP said that they try not to prescribe antibiotics in otherwise healthy people and they were having great success with the ventolin.

>>>and I wondered how long this is going to last ?

From Monday to Friday last week I spent up to 22 hours per day in bed and ate just a couple of sandwiches and a few biscuits (that's for the whole week!). On Saturday I managed a steak and a pint but I still spent most of the day trying to sleep, as I did on Sunday. During this week I've gradually been 'coming round' and I'm considerably better (but still rather 'chesty') today.

My friend had it before I did (and almost certainly gave it to me). He still had a really bad cough, and was tiring easily, when I saw him earlier today.

So, as Sqad says, you might have some way to go yet. (BTW: I'm just using Ibuprofen; nothing else).
