The correct approach, I have learnt from a Russian; (Zinovy Zinik) " The ritual of consuming vodka is a special kind of yoga with its own system of breathing, you breathe deeply, gulp down an entire glassful and then, still holding your breath, take a bite of something salty (pickled cucumber or salted herring, etc.) then you let the air out of your lungs".
I have been experimenting for the last hour and can confirm his veracity :0)

You been left 'home alone' ?
so just how drunk are you ? :)
He can't be drunk if he's able to spell veracity.
Don't forget that after downing the vodka in one gulp that your supposed to throw the empty glass at the fire place. Russian tradition !.
Maybe he meant to type 'elasticity' Jackdaw.

Much obliged to our old 2nd WW war allies on their advice as how to imbibe Vodka, I will have a bloody Mary when our friends threaten to nuke us. It deadens the pain as you are vapourised. :-)
^ Cheerful to the end.
"so just how drunk are you ? :)"

Verging on hospitalisation if the pickled cucumber and salted herring's anything to go by. :)

I didn't want to confuse folk last night by continuing with the directions, but Zinik continues with a 'second system' which is the opposite; "You breathe out, emptying your lungs, gulp down the full glass and take a bite of the pickle while holding your breath. No one has so far proved which of the systems is more efficient. With the third glass, the drinker achieves a state of bliss, true paradise. The sensation does not last long however, and all the glasses that follow are attempts to regain the paradise-of-the-third-glass lost." !!!
Having travelled a lot in the USSR (way back), I dispute the "entire glassful"....entire bottle, yes!
I was taught the correct way to drink vodka in Siberia many years ago. It's true, I remember drinking vast amounts of er home made vodka and never had a hangover

gingejbee; Did you encounter the 'pickle method' ? It, according to Zinovy Zinik, seems to be something we have been completely unaware of, and I have wondered in the past why so many jars of pickled gherkins come from the east.

Does anyone remember a brief fad in the 1980's for pouring vodka into your eye?
Can anyone explain to me why (the taste of Vodka being so awful you have to immediately gulp something else down,) you don't just leave out the Vodka ?
Vodka distilled in this country tastes nothing like authentic Russian vodka which can easily be drunk neat.

I'm accompanying my pickles for purposes of this experiment, with Moskovskaya - Premium Russian Vodka, it's smooth, clean and slides down the throat like god in silver breeches :0)
