I'm looking for sewing project ideas for thing 1 (we actually got her sewing machine out on the weekend and she's a natural - unfortunately I am not). I have goggled but it just comes up with hand sewing things or 'easy' patterns. Can anyone point me in the right direction? PS - she's only just turned 7 if that makes any difference.

That's excellent, thank you. All I could find was easy patterns for blouses, etc - hardly exciting.
I was a bit older than that when I made an apron. Gingham fabric - easy to cut along the stripes - tape for the ties at waist and neck. Pocket too, if you feel ambitious.
Hi sherrardk,
A money pouch which is just basically a U shaped piece of material cut to whatever size .. sew up the U bit & turn over/sew a one inch hem at the top leaving a hole & thread some ribbon through as a drawstring. Also, what about a pillow case which is just an oblong shape & she could add stuff to personalise it. Dolls clothes too!
Yes an apron!
Some lovely books here, easy projects and the books aren't expensive.

Thanks both. It's baby steps at the moment - I haven't touched a sewing machine since school, just threading the flipping thing was torture. It's a mini-adult machine rather than a toy (and it's bright pink) and she loves it, knew exactly what to do (somehow).

Thank you too Woofgang.

Excellent, thing 1 loves watching how to do things on the net (her and books don't get 'on').
Great idea woof. You tube is excellent for how to vids!
might be an avenue into books then sherrardk, the books have all the patterns in.
do girls her age still have dolls ?
when I was around that age and got a sewing machine I started making dolls clothes to sell at school and some people also brought me dolls to have them dressed for gifts

She has Monster High dolls which a little bigger than Barbies - might be a bit too intricate for her first couple of projects (and my sanity).
I toyed with the idea of make a couple of these for Christmas presents.... You can down load the pattern for free... they make great door stops and I thnk would be fun for your little one.

They're are cool - she'd love them. Thank you.
Iove the Scottie dog!!! I know what I will be making at the weekend!

My friends little girl is seven and has just started sewing she's made dresses and "monsters" cushion covers for her bed and was taken by doing some quilting but rather than squares or triangles long strips and different shapes it's coming together quite nicely. I found lots of patterns for her on Pinterest :)

I love hearing about little ones sewing can't wait to get my boyfriends children on a machine, can't get them off the iPads though :)
