She states "When I see the picture it looks completely beautiful to my eyes." and then goes on to say "I wasn't being provocative. The point of the photo was to de-mystify all the taboos that are around menstruation."

Questions:

1 - Is it beautiful?
2 - What taboos are there around menstruation? I can't think of any.

I won't draw a parrallel between this natural, normal bodily function and another natural, normal bodily function that I'm sure nobody would like to see (oops, just have drawn the parrallel).

I think it is very inconvenient for the Beeb to show University Challenge while I am eating supper, that doesn't mean it should be moved though. When it comes to ads, well all of them could be closed off, for all I care, and the TV would be much better, that ain't going to happen unless Russia or ISIS take us over.

major fail then,I'm sure quite a lot of men have seen this sort of thing at home. If she was going to "demystify" menstruation then show a photo of her applying a tampon or sticking a liner to her pants.

Yep, I'm all about breaking the taboos surrounding a subject. The good thing is grandad wouldn't mind. He's got dementia so he doesn't know where he is half the time.

It obviously was necessary, because some men on this thread, and out there in the real world, thought that a woman knew exactly when her period was going to come. Periods aren't that considerate. Also some men on this thread, and in the world, think she had not bought the right sanitary protection. Sometimes it catches women by surprise and periods can be heavier than we thought. And I'm sure the situation in this photo happens to lots of women. So if it's helped some naïve people understand periods, then it's been useful. And it's helpful to women, if men can be more understanding about what a bloody nuisance periods actually are.

Totally unnecessary, there are no taboos about menustration, men know women have them, and usually panic when you say you've missed two. There is nothing beautiful or mystifying about it, inconvenient sometimes painful and messy. Why show a photo? TMI as far as I'm concerned.

What an interesting thread to read. As for the picture it doesn't bother me, I can't be the only woman who's woken up like that at some point in their life but it's no way art nor a taboo buster. What I am amazed at is someone thinks sanitary products shouldn't be advertised at tea-time - unless it's actually 1951.

Personally I think the picture is revolting, but at least Sqad hasn't followed through with his threat to post his hairy ar se for us all to see. Now that really would put us off our tea.
