My brother was contacted by a company several months ago. Initially he ignored them, but then after contacting me,we decided to look into the matter, and give the company the go-ahead.
The fee is high, but there is no way either of us can investigate on our own. It is in regards to a relative on our fathers side...and we know very little about them. How long does something like this take? Will they already have a fair amount of information as to what sort of inheritance is involved?
We both feel that whatever the amount is,it's something we'd not have or even know about otherwise. So...a bonus.

Have you asked them what is the high fee for?
I know they will say paper work, time for finding your brother etc, but in which way did they contact you both?
Sorry I forgot to ask, is the company in UK and have you got their address?

Its a well established(70+ years) American company...based in Salt Lake City,Utah
The fee is standard...or seems to be...for this type of company. They search records, have specialists in genealogy. When they contacted my brother they already had information on both myself here in the UK,and my dads side of the family, particularly his brothers. There is no fee if there is no inheritance. I think they contact relatives if there is a fairly strong possibility that there will be a result.
My brother and I had a similar letter at the end of last year. The fee was about 25%. I was going to try and claim it myself, but that would have meant speaking to family whilst I sorted it all out.

There wasn't too much money but it paid for my new laptop :-)
