Last night Youngest Junior Overall was coming home from school and was waiting to cross a busy main road. Waiting to cross from the other side of the road was an elderly lady. When there was a gap in the traffic they both set off but the lady tripped and fell over in the road. YJO went to her assistance, shielded her from oncoming cars, checked sure she wasn't hurt, helped her to her feet and to safety and then retrieved her belongings which had spilled from her bag. He received several angry toots and glares from motorists throughout. He then escorted her to her destination (her friends house), holding her hand all the way.
The whole incident would have been witnessed by numerous motorists and scores of pedestrians (remember, a large school had just disgorged around 900 pupils and lots of staff) yet only one 14 year old boy, my kind and caring son, stepped in to help.
I am so very proud of him but disgusted that no one else went to help.
If this is society today, then you can keep it.

Your son is part of "society today" so don't worry too much.

There have always been a-holes.
Robinia when I cricked my ankle and fell over ( immediately ) someone pulled their pram over me
I commented 'thank you'

but at least I was thankful I hadnt been decapitated - if you look at the Lee Rigby video - as the angel at the scene is talking to them, people are walking past pulling their prams as fast as poss

Another time I fell over with the dog licking my face and saying 'what are you doing down on my level?' a car stopped and out popped a tattoo in tee shirt and jeans, " all right mate?" and the passenger window came down and his mother screeched 'no he isnt ! pick him up !'

so well done young fella !

There have always been a-holes.// Beso

unfortunate juncture I am sure despite the grammar that Beso doesnt include your son amongst the ass holes
Why wasn't your son using the school crossing, mrs_o?
Well done, JuniorO.....he's had a great example watching his Mum helping her vertically challenged friends across busy roads....

Mind you...she leaves me in the middle............... :-(
What a treasure! Give that young man a pat on the back from me xx
Well done to your son Mrs O, and to you. I feel sad when I hear stories where other people don't stop to help someone.
Well done to your son and yourself for bringing him up so well, Mrs O. My faith in human kind is a bit restored at present, as my car had a puncture on Wednesday, OH and I were looking at it and thinking "oh hell!" when a really kind man who was parked in his white van ahead of us, said that he's change it for us, and did just that, and whilst he was doing it a young couple came up and asked if they could help in any way, as they had been in the same situation themselves the day before! The nice man who helped us wouldn't even take a drink from us, so next time we see anyone who needs help, we will hopefully be able to help them (although hopefully we would do that in any case).
Aww I love the bit where he held her hand. Great boy mrs O.

Update:

A member of the public rang the school today and told them what had happened - he witnessed everything (I question why he didn't help?).
He was singing the praises of YJO. Various teachers have stopped YJO throughout the day to pat him on the back.
Naturally he is mortified, which goes to show he is not an angel, but a perfectly normal 14 year old.

Thank you so much for the lovely comments - I have had a lump in my throat reading them. xx
Brilliant :-) secretly pleased? Xx

Excellent stuff, well done junior overall. You have every right to be proud of your lad, mrs overseas.
Wonderful mrs_o however I am very surprised, the good folk of Whitby have always struck me as genuine Yorkshire people who are usually keen to help anyone.
Just read this lovely story Mrs O - bless him, how kind he sounds. He will make someone a lovely caring husband one day and you can be sure he will look after you well in your old age to repay you for bringing him up so well. ;) xx
