Anybody think that its appropriate for an 11 year old boy to dress as a character
from a book described in Wiki as a "erotic romance", aimed at adults and notable for its explicitly erotic scenes featuring elements of sexual practices involving bondage/discipline, dominance/submission, and sadism/masochism (BDSM) ?

I heard his Mother being interviewed on the Today Program this morning and she seemed to think it was funny. She did admit, however, that he didn't know what the book was about, so why did he want to dress like this in the first place ?

The school has not 'taken the moral high ground' - it has acted because of the inappropriate costume worn by a child on Worldwide Book Day.

You still seem to think that this is somehow connected with sex education in schools when it is clearly not connected in any way.

Sex education is provided under the National Curriculum, and schools are legally obliged to educate children under its auspieces, they do not have a choice.

Inviting children to wear a costume on World Book Day is down to each individual school to partake or not as they wish, and therefore they have the right to decide what is and what is not appropriate in terms of costumes provided.

My sex education consisted of teaching us about periods and BO. I'm glad my childrens education extended further than knowing to clean their armpits and girls get hormonal sometimes.

I am more annoyed that the school take the moral high ground. The book is a current book no matter how badly it is written. That was the theme of the dress up day.If schools are being urged to promote homosexuality in their sex education lessons I see no big deal if an 11 year old dresses as a character from this book.It smacks of hypocrisy.

Andy is right.

I posted this today to encourage a debate on whether it was appropriate to allow an 11 year old to go to school dressed as a character from an adult novel, with a S+M theme. I think it was very unsuitable and we all seem to agree that his Mother was being less than sensible. This has nothing whatsoever to do with teaching sexual matters in schools. I would be happy to take part in that debate, if someone where to start one specifically about the issue.

Now.... can we stay on topic please !
