Has anyone ever used one of those automatic feeding machines that dispense dry food in the absence of the cat owner? Are they reliable?

We have one, inside. It goes off 4x per day. It been running for 5 months. Just had to change the batteries once. it would enable us to go away for a weekend without having to worry.

What a difficult situation for you, you have my best wishes. Whilst Pusscat may be difficult to rehome, it might be possible to find a 'foster home', where someone would look after her whilst you are unable to, but you retain ownership, cover vet's bills and look after her when you are able. As she is elderly she may settle quite happily into two houses and not be worried about going outside. As other have said, advertise at the vet's, supermarkets, everywhere. Perhaps CPL might agree to carry an ad. for you?
Does Pusscat like your friend? It is not certain that she will be afraid of the dogs. If at all possible could you have a short visit to your friend. Keep Pusscat on a leash when she is not in her carrier.

Another option is these people.

I am sure that the perfect solution is out there.

very reliable on a day to day use.

Thanks for the further replies and the link from Wolf. I have never heard of the Cinnamon Trust. I want to try and keep the cat if I can though. However, I will donate to the Trust because it`s a very good cause. I might even volunteer with them in the future.
SJ, is the cat still staying with your mum? If so it means that you have longer to deal with the situation. It would be good for both of them too. Cats are not as stupid as they look (apart from Princess Merlin in my avatar).

Best wishes
