for the first time ever, I now have a phone that unless you happen to witness the event at the time, seems to give no indication that it has received a call, sms or e-mail. previously every phone I've ever had has displayed a message on the screen, or a flashing red light to tell me something has happened, whilst the nokia lumia is just a black brick; unless you touch it, you can't even tell if it's on.

is there a hidden setting that might help me?

Dial 121 for the settings and you can choose how it lets you know. Mine gives an icon and texts me.
