Is it worth giving iron supplements to someone who is suffering from the symptoms of low haemoglobin or does it not make any difference?

Try to ask your mother's oncologist about the supplements that will help and that will be safe for your mother again and if he/she will not be able to provide you with an adequate reply, try to consult another doctor. Do not risk to give any supplements according to the replies you get on Internet, as most of us do not have medical experience and do not know the details of your mother's condition.
I come out with Bedkn and sqad

the standard view is NOT to treat iron deficiency anaemia until you have found out what has caused it

( ie not a diagnosis in itself but more of a sign - oops getting a bit technical there )
