when you only want to buy a pint?
If I bought 6 pints of milk from Tesco it would cost £1.48, so I would expect to pay 24/25p for a pint, but no, a pint of milk would cost .49p which is double. I can't understand why as the packaging is smaller and there must be so many people who only want to buy a pint if they don't use that much milk. Ok, I'll get down off my soap box now I've had my rant. :-)

I think it might help Barsel. I believe it costs some dairy farmers quite a bit more to produce the milk than they are paid for it. If we'renot careful we'll end up having to import all milk in the future.

Then there's KVIs, that's Known Value Items...these are the items that supermarkets are aware that customers actually know and remember the prices of. The shops will do their best to keep these KVI prices as low as possible...things like 250gm butter, large sliced loaf, 1kilo sugar and 4 pints milk (the BIG one) - which is why they sell it at silly prices like £1 and now 89p.
I'm fairly sure the farmer gets the same price for each pint, irrespective of what size container you get it in from the supermarket. Supermarkets are all using the 4pts as a loss leader. I used to buy 2pts of skimmed for my husband who prefers it, but now I buy 4 pts and pour away the last pint when it's off. Ridiculous but true.
You can freeze milk.
Hardly ever any room in my freezer as it is.
Many years ago a pint of milk cost the same price as a pint of beer
You're not far wrong, Gollob. I remember that when milk cost 8d per pint beer cost 1/6d, double the price. By that analogy milk should be somewhere around £1.50 per pint.
A small amount of anything costs more.
Obviously a fault to be single and not wish to waste foodstuff.
