Story Set In India

Can any of you bookworms help me please? Back in 1990 (poss 1989 or 1991)at Christmas I was given a hardback book set in India, not sure if fact or fiction but think it was fiction and I want to buy it again but don't know the title. The hardback book was covered in the most beautiful cover of mountains in shades of pale blue. Can anyone help please? My thanks to anyone who can help.

Could it be THe Far Pavillions by MM Kaye. It was printed earlier than you mention though

Her other book, Shadow Of The Moon, also set in India, is also a great read
