If you've bought something ( a tablet) using a credit card (Visa) and it gets broken within a week of purchase can you claim from the credit card?

No.

Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974 makes the credit provider jointly liable with the retailer for resolving problems that the retailer would normally have to fix. (So you can claim against either the retailer or the credit provider if your purchase is faulty or otherwise not fit for purpose). However Section 75 doesn't provide consumers with insurance against breakages. (A few credit card providers might voluntarily offer some form of short-term insurance for purchases but a standard Visa card wouldn't do so).
Hi Pinstripe, does the tablet not have a 12 month warranty, if it does then I would try this avenue first. If the breakage is a result of your own negligence though, I don't think anyone is going to replace it unless it is insured for accidental damage.
I am sure some cards offer this purchase insurance as an additional service. I don't think it would be as long as a week - usually a day or two. Check your credit card T&Cs but it certainly isn't so common these days.
