I have just had the misfortune of being presented with *that* after a meal.

I thought it was the finest !

It smelt and tasted like TCP (I haven't tasted TCP but I had to exaggerate ;) )

If this is the best people think Scotland has to offer as a malt...I despair.

As an addendum....and in fairness my hubby thought it had a 'peaty' aroma as opposed to medicinal.

So peeps...is it down to palate?

I enjoy a malt so i'm very very surprised and disappointed. I still drank it ;) (still have the TCP taste in my mouth yet !!)

Thoughts and crucially recommendations :)

Ta, tony :)
Young laphroaigs, similar to Springbanks and other young Campbelltown whiskies can taste like a dose of TCP they are very acquired.... 8yo Ardbeg is great for cleaning cuts...!! Grouse is a gutrot blend no real taste to it, terrible finish to it but it seems popular. I suspect Kylesmum is looking for a softer sweeter, lees smoky whisky, if so look at speysides, Macallan is a good example, Balvennie something like that or the Highland Malts, Glenmorangie, Dalwhinnie Tomatin are all good examples. Avoid any islands if you are not a fan of smokey whiskies, Lagavuilin is a belter if you do though, Talisker, Jura, the Bruichladdichs and bunahabain.. the 12yo is great the 25 is simply sublime....
As far as I'm concerned I'd rather drink drain cleaner than Laphroig.
It is truly disgusting.
Any of the Balvenies are lovely , though.
If you want to 'work up' to peaty whiskies, try the Black Grouse.
Sir Oracle, I love whisky (which is why I rarely drink it, because otherwise I'd drink too much) so Glenfiddich has its place as 'everyday' over the cheaper blends (I'm rather partial to Chivas Regal)- perhaps I should have written 'everymonth'. I've been round the distillery as well, fascinating.

Slapshot - I can only imagine the 25 yr.-old Ben... Probably stop me drinking Chivas Regal....
Glenfiddich... lighthoose whisky.... damn near water!!

Chivas, Black Label, Black Bottle and some of the Jura blends, superstition, Duirachs Choice are nice... wouldn't touch the grouses and bells of this world with a bargepole.

I am a malt snob and will happily admit it but i don't drink much so when I do, I want it to be the best I can afford, same with wine, Armagnac etc
Why is Dimple Haig only available on line, Slappy?
If you want a smokey tasting Malt try Talisker. I used to use it to make a sauce for a salmon dish yes, honestly I did none for the cook.
Agree, slappy, the Fiddich is commercial *** - having said that, the old man once inherited some of their 'sampling bottles,' courtesy of one of the great whisky families.....now they were interesting - and so was the 'farclas when you are talking 145 proof......just had to be cut.
Not whiskey (yet ), I'm supping a glass of this stuff right now and t'is very very nice.

The Mrs brought me some Isle of Arran 14yr old malt back for jocko land earlier this year and it was excellent. For everyday drinking I don't mind grouse or Bells. Imo, Teachers has to be the worst whiskey by far.
Not sure why Flower... Ive seen it recently in shops here Psybbs. Dimple isn't too bad either
Thanks, Slappy. We buy it for a close friend but have had to order it from masterofmalt, never found any Haig in Ayr x
In winter when choice is limited I'll take a drop of 'frog, although of the mainstreams I would rather have a Lagavulin 16 yr old. I do enjoy Islay malts of a Winter time the smokiness is so evocative of an open fire.

AFAIC Glenfiddich is only good for a toddy.

Psybbs - Gap Wines, 642 Antrim Road, Belfast BT15 5GP, Belfast, for Haigh Dimple...(01)289 078 1453
I have just won Case (6 bottles) of Grant’s Signature Blended Scotch Whisky in a competition. It is winging its way to my brother. It looks nice. I am sure that Andrew will be able to force himself to drink it.

I have no idea if it is good stuff or not.

Thanks, DTC

I don't drink whisky, single or blended , so I can't comment on the smell/taste but I have friends who LOVE a good single malt and they just LOVE this name.

Thank you all for taking the time to post your recommendations, i'm a rookie so i'll jot down a list of ones which might suit my palate and nonchalantly leave it lying on the kitchen table...you know, like a shopping list ;) Santa might just take the hint !

Think i've been mentally scarred by that Laphroaig btw....can still taste the b ugger even yet ;)
I think Laphroaig must be the "Marmite" of the malt Whisky(e)y world people either love it or loathe it there's no middle ground.
