I think Bob Monkhouse was a very underrated comedian. He was much more than the slightly smarmy TV host. One of my favourite of his jokes was ::

" You know...they all laughed when I said I was going to earn my living as a comedian. Well, they're not laughing now "

I'm unsure anyone underrates him. He was quick, witty, had a good memory for quips. And his presentation was fine for the day.

100% agree OG ! By the way, there is a quick query for you, waiting over in Chatterbox.
I always thought that he looked smarmy - that puts people off.

I liked Dave Allen/Allan - he was really funny.
I LOVED Dave Allen. He died way too young.
I remember Bob Monkhouse and Denis Goodwin together.. Now, THAT is going back a LONG time ago.
bob monkhouse was a brilliant joke writer and a very poor joke teller sadly
His 'one-liners' were funny. However I saw him live in a local nightclub in the seventies and his act was pure filth. I have a very well developed sense of humour but some of his jokes were way beyond the mark.
Bit like Bernard Manning then, Margo?
DTC - I only ever saw Bernard Manning on TV so I can't really comment but I would image they were akin. In Bob's defence he lived locally to me and did an awful lot for charities in the area. Like Jan I remember his partnership with Denis Goodwin and they wrote some clever stuff.
Yes, I've seen both Bob M and Bernard M live MANY years ago. Both were crude, VERY crude. Bernard M was funny though but Bob M. wasn't funny at all. His live act was vile. He was capable of so much better but he went for the lowest form of joke telling. He was embarrassing actually.
The one that could really bang them out, and filthy too, was Ken Dodd. Very clever as he started clean and they slowly got bluer and bluer as time went on, bringing the audience along with him, and how he could rattle them off. You end up laughing and he's already half-way through the next one.
And apparently would keep going all night (if you'll pardon the expression) He was a job to get of stage.
Sorry - off stage
I never thought of Ken Dodd as being smutty, I've always quite liked him.x
never seen him with an adult audience then, Barsel? Smutty but very funny because of the way he took you along with him.....and, God, could he keep going.
I liked Bob Monkhouse, but I never saw him live.

This was one of his.

A tomcat hijacked a plane, stuck a pistol into the pilot's ribs and demanded: "Take me to the canaries."
My brother once saw him by accident, crossed wires about dates, and said he was fantastic totally different to his TV personality.
I once saw Ken Dodd at Buxton Opera House, we had an interval around 9.30 and folk were going home as they thought the show was over instead of half way through. A very funny man but I couldn't remember much later as he gags were so quick
I've never laughed more than I did at a 'Bob Monkhouse live' video.
