Any gas fitters give me an idea how much a basic gas safe course will cost. And what it will allow a person to touch/work on
I am aware of all the different grades a person can be qualified in, cookers, boilers caravans LPG etc
I see adverts for plumbers who are gas safe So what would a basic qualification allow a person to work on. Running a gas supply to an appliance only maybe?
I want to pay for a course for my son to improve his job prospects.

There is training for domestic gas, and something different for commercial gas. Gas Safe certification permits an individual to install a new gas appliance or service it, plus new pipework. The way many people do it is to convert from having plumbing skills, to extend the scope of what they can do to include gas work. You do not say if your son has plumbing skills already.
Training is part rhetorical but must involve working alongside registered technician for a period to build up skills to demonstrate a competence portfolio before final certification occurs.
Cost? - low thousands, I would think, depending on college or commercial training provider.
Theoretical, obviously, damn that spell guess system
Mine cost £3600.00
I assume that there are regular refresher courses too ?
