We have read much about the effects of passive smoking, seen smoking banned in pubs and public places etc, now they are thinking of passing laws regarding to smoking in one's car if there are children present.

As a non smoker I am not saying that I disagree with these measures, but what I do disagree with is the hypocritical anti-smoking hysteria shown by some, when they think nothing of driving around in their diesel fuelled vehicles.

TTT, So I guess you aren't a smoker then?
Here we go again, do you not understand the Vehicles some of you condem run the services of the place you live.
i completely understand TWR that's why I said hike the tax on diesel for private cars, not trucks etc. Let the trucks use red diesel.
Just let us drive diesels if we want! Im tired of the green brigade whinging that everything we do is bad . Im sure they are just to drag us back to pre-industrial days. In fact I think they are all anti-capitalists in disguise.
They are Dave, and better get down to Halfords for your red flag to be walked in front of your motor if they get their way.

And watch out for those cudgels aimed at any machine.
Stunning idea.... ban the most efficient hydrocarbon fuel from use.....
A.O.G / Eddie, a HGV + a Diesel car no matter how old an Engine still has to pass an Emission test. Regards Red Diesel It can damage a Vehicle that is NOT Farm Tractor / Diggers / Etc.

Is it the red dye that's used that is harmful TWR, that appears to be the only difference between that and regular Diesel?

Agree with slappy......

It's about emissions management as most new diesel fuels have low NOx, SOx and particulate emissions and it's especially the latter that causes the debate. Tighten up the rules on the emissions test by all means

Along with:

*encouraging low S (0% sulphur) fuels to be made - usually synthesis from N-Gas
*encouraging additive development for lubs to find NOx surpressors instead of relying on urea based traps etc.
*programmes to extend fuel economy by drive by wire that takes weight off the car and gives massive benefits as well as longer tyre life, thereby making the most efficient hydrocarbon that we have even more efficient.
*encouragement of other fuel economy technologies.....
all i will say is 'i love my diesels' i use a l200 in winter and a vw lt35 in summer to tow a 1.5 ton digger around, i would think i would need something with a much larger petrol engine to tow this around therefor probably just as much pollution. also i haven't seen mentioned you can legally store diesel in bulk last time i bought 2500 litres i paid 5ppl less than pump prices,a saving of £125 and when the price drops below what i paid i just use the garage.
The Sulphur Damages the Injectors tips + the Valves.
Balders - diesel in W Europe has a far higher censtistoke over tractor diesel as well - that leads to a cleaner burn and lower particulate emissions.....one sees it in the exhaust, a well tuned engine with white exhaust or none, tractors etc being black.
With respect DT, depending on the amount of ( Soot) call it what it what you like at the end of the Exhaust, you sometimes notice Black smoke coming from the rear of a diesel exhaust, that could be Injector Trouble or too much fuel getting through.
that is true, TWR - it's no small subject and oil cos like Shell are looking at all sorts of chemistry to reduce emissions but retain the burn
Typical Daily Mail rubbish! Petrol fumes as harmful as diesel.
Commercial Euro6 diesel's , which are the only ones allowed to be sold since 1st January 2014 are so clean that the exhaust gas is cleaner than the air going into the engine. !
Older engines are being discouraged by being banned from 'low emission zones' in major cities and by a daily surcharge similar to the London congestion charge that is proposed. Within 10 years there will be virtually no diesel emissions in city's within the EU. Emission causing engines will be priced off the road.
Ok TWR use normal diesel, all I'm saying is that the government needs to introduce different pricing for private use v commercial use.
^^ How the hell could dual pricing for fuel work? People would just register as a one man business.
same way red deisel works now.
