Old geezer, the boy bands and girl bands are as strong as ever. One Direction are as big as The Beatles were in the 1960's.

For all I know they can't even play a note on an instrument.
While there's 13 year old girls, never.
I can't see it happening with Simon Cowell cashing in on manufactured drivel he creates from his tv shows.

Word of advice to Ben Haenow, don't sell the van just yet!
Thankfully there is now a trend towards the likes of 5SOS, All Time Low etc - rock/post-punk bands who write their own songs and play all instruments. Taking my daughter to see ATL at Wembley in March and tickets (about 50,000 I think) pretty much sold out on the day of release.
Hopefully never!

Pop music needs 'em to keep us in sugary sweet infectious songs for which I for one am a sucker for.
depends, there's a difference between bands manufactured for a TV show and those like the Beatles formed more organically from friends and neighbours. Back in my day... puts on rose-tinted spectacles... there was horror that the Monkees just seemed to have been put together by an entrepreneur putting an ad in the paper. Now that's more like normal, though most of them aren't as good as the Monkees turned out to be.
Gosh....the Monkees were the first boy band. How old are we??

I like some of the boy band/Girl band tunes. I wouldn't buy their albums though.
Actually....I take that back. I barely remember the Monkees :-D
Is there a difference? Really? Apart from their longevity and credibility amongst people in 'the biz'?

Surely pop music is still pop music no matter who wrote it and still as listenable?

What really sorts the wheat from the chaff is when they're able to write (good ones!) songs and play instruments as well- right?

Look at Take That. Gary Barlow is a very talented song writer who spent years writing for other people.
Zakly, so even within a so called sugary pop boyband there can be quality talent.

Annoys me slightly when people are so quick to laugh off these groups and singers when in fact they do exactly what they say on the tin- make great pop ditties.

And yes, im not ashamed to say I like 1D!
1D have done some catchy tunes.
