I'm amazed more of them don't get hyperthermia which is very unpleasant and can be fatal.
Margaret Tuppen, president of the swimming club, said: "It is a shame to break tradition.

"I do moan about health and safety sometimes, but the conclusion of the meeting was that it can be quite dangerous - especially when drink is involved.

"If it means a tragedy is prevented then we support the decision."

The club doesn't seem too upset by it

We have a Boxing Day Dip here in Dover - usually hundreds of people go in - but it's at midday so not too many people who've been drinking go it.

It's not something I'd do myself - my sister went in about three years ago, she said it was the coldest thing she'd ever done. She got a badge for it, mind you - our friend has done it every year for 30 years, he got a special badge :-)
Oh well thats elf and safety for you. The Brighton swimmers could however travel up to London and have a swim in the Serpentine.

We have a Christmas Day charity dip at Felixstowe. A guy I used to work with had previously been a lifeguard at Felixstowe Leisure Centre and he had hated the event because he and his colleagues were expected to give up their Christmas Day to provide lifeguard cover. The last time he did it he had to go into the freezing cold water three times to pull people out; he was seriously unimpressed!
Seems Brighton Council have been vindicated - winter bathing is hazardous off Brighton beach with the dangerous surf.
