Leaving aside the (admittedly justifiable) mocking tone of the report...would you mistake Westminster Cathedral for a mosque?

yes, the tower does look like a minaret, though overall it's not dissimilar to Italian churches (which was probably deliberate on the part of the architect, he wouldn't want an RC cathedral looking like a north European Protestant church).

Nonetheless, if I were a politician I think I'd check it out before speaking/tweeting.
With the ebb and flow of history and peoples, who knows what it will be eventually. Hagia Sofia in Turkey was once one of the greatest churches in Christendom, later a mosque, and now a museum.
I once mistook a bouncy castle for a mosque on account of all the shoes lined up at the entrance.

And didn't a load of Americans mistake London Bridge for Tower Bridge in the 70s...and purchased the wrong one?
I think that's a bit of an urban myth; Americans aren't stupid.
and the Chinese of course just build their own, only bigger

/Americans aren't stupid./ surely some are, how do you account for Disneyland, Michael Jackson etc.
// /Americans aren't stupid.//

then how do you explain voting for George W Bush or Obama ?
They are probably too ignorant to realise that the images of Christ above the door rule out this being a Mosque. Images of religious figures are actually forbidden by Islam. In fact images of any sort are forbidden in Mosques, only scripts of the Quran are permitted to be shown.
As said, this is the RC Cathedral and is a lot more ornate than an Anglican Cathedral . Actually St Pauls with it's dome is more likely to be mistaken for a Mosque!
Is there no end to their stupidity?
sp1814 I saw a 'Yank' taking photos of Tower Bridge, it was a while ago and he had a film camera. I had to point out that the photo's would be better if he removed the lens cap first!
Talking about 'Stupid Yanks' it would be hard to beat the story about the wife of the Guy who recorded 'Ghostbusters' ( Ray Parker Junior?)
They were in Rome and had asked for but been refused an audience with the Pope. She was heard to loudly complain
'' But Honey, surely he has kids who are into Ghostbusters!''

No I wouldn't, having been brought up as a Catholic but then again, I am not a UKIP supporter ! Its typical of this party that they immediately resort to this kind of thing, rather than address the concerns brought up in the BBC link.
By the way, this building is one of the most beautiful in London and I can enthusiastically recommend a visit there. A little bit of Byzantium in Town.
Thanks to our Mystery Poster at 22:11...very funny !
Lol Ludwig. I like that.
Nice to see the lefty's displaying a 'sort of' sense of humour.
// Lol Ludwig. I like that. //

I can't take the credit. I nicked it off Harry Hill.
His version had him going in to a bouncy castle, putting his shoes with the rest, and jumping around for ten minutes before realising he was in a mosque.

Which BBC link would that be mikey?
There is a link to

UKIP blaa blah "and so the voting box is set up outside a mosque, so much for random selection"

and the Beeb hack - "do you really wanna say that I think you should check"

which I think is better than what she couldhave written
hey ev'ry bardy - this bozo thinks a cathedral is a mosque !

and the confusion arises I think for the po' fella is that the cathedral is stripey like Cordoba = mosque and has basilica shape like santa sophia = mosque...
so he said gotcha

The comment about they didnt want Westminster to look like a prod C19 church I wonder about. The basilica style ( where the bishop sits enthroned at the end ) was an early form of church -which is why er Santa sophia looks like a basilica ( it was ). The study of the form of a church and how it rehearses function is called ecclesiology
