And I couldn't agree more it is just that some are suggesting that an homophobic attack is more serious than any other reason for attacking an individual, be them white, black, Asian, Chinese, Jew, or straight etc.

It's reported as a homophobic attack, because a group of people were beating up two gay men whilst shouting homophobic slurs.
What else would it be?
If they were shouting racist slurs, it would be treated as a race attack and so on.

Hate crimes are dealt with more severely because the point of them is to make specific minorities live in fear that the majority do not share.
You know - sttaught people don't have to look over their shoulder when leaving bars and clubs in provincial towns for fear of random attacks - or do they?

On the specific point - I wouldn't like to be subjected to a musical event which I have not chosen and could not escape. It probably wasn't my sort of music. Intrusive, unnecessary and annoying/irritating. I would feel more negative towards the group. The cause which they represented remains a different story.

By the way, like most normal people I roundly condemn this cowardly attack on this couple.
I find it disappointing that others seek to cloud the issue, especially after reading this from the Manchester Evening News:
Jean Claude Manseau and Jake Heaton were reciting tunes from the hit musical on the Metrolink service from Bury to Manchester when a man started hurling anti-gay taunts at them.
The pals got off the tram at Market Street and started walking towards Canal Street when the passenger approached them in Piccadilly Gardens.
They described how he then called over to 15-strong group, who crowded round the two friends and began attacking them.
Jean Claude, known to his friends as Jo, was knocked unconscious and suffered numerous head injuries in the attack.
Jake, a 19-year-old customer service adviser, was punched in the back of the head but managed to reach a nearby shop to call for help.
But then again, I suppose that everyone has different things that get them mad. Not everyone shares my disgust at this - that's life.
