A friend of mine was interviewed and it wasn't the first time she's had a passport. She's over the age of 18 as well. Maybe it has something to do with family background or previous travel?
Temporarily, he could get a cashplus account- if he's been on the Electoral roll for a while they often don't need additional ID, you can have wages paid into those, some people who work for us have them and they're useful, but you do have to pay a small monthly fee, so maybe not long term depending on his choice.

I don't think that's job done. They just confirm proof of address. I think he'll need some form of photo ID. Passport or driving licence.
Diz...I looked at the .GOV site and it didn't mention interviews but did say first passport takes longer.
He could go joint

he will always need one from list A - identification
and one from list B - address

so they should be satisfied with a passport for A - bit NOT paper birt cert
and any utils for list B
or a letter addressed to his homs address from his employer

he can use a bit of imagination - someone must hav written to him !

Banks are difficult about this - v diff because if they money launder the govt can basically fine the a+++ off them
As far as I know you now need photographic ID, to open a bank account, including a joint one. Not everyone has or needs a passport and the same with a photo driving licence, my daughter had the same problem, she ended up getting a provisional even though she has no intention of driving, wasted money, but no other option.
My sister would be like your future sil - she has absolutely no ID.

Doesn't drive - no licence, doesn't travel - no passport.

Some years back it was imperative to get something for the solicitor.

A passport PHOTO only (not the actual passport) was given to him but I had to get it signed by a priest or doctor - anybody who knew her. It done the trick but don't know if this would be applicable to the bank.

No..it wouldn't be acceptable.

If he goes to the PostOffice to arrange for his passport, will it be quicker
No, all the Post Office do is check that everything is completed properly, it won't get processed any quicker.

How will his employers know whose bank account his wages are going into? Can't he give them the account number and sort code and his own name? Names are not checked by the banks, its only the account number and sort code that matter so I can't see a problem?

yes there is an interview for one`s first..never used to be...fortunately he lives near a passport office...Liverpool only 17 miles away.
Wouldn't the passport office ask for proof of address?
P45 won`t do...has to be
from the inland revenue..

I thought that was where all P45s came from.
you do need an interview for you first british adult passport, and have done so for at least a few years. Obviouslt this takes longer than just applying for a renewal
BlackAdder....the company you worked for issue your P45, your new employer sends off their section to HMRC when they have received it.

I know it is about two weeks since I put this post but thought I would let you know the outcome.
He got a Pre-Paid Mastercard..he can (is )having his salary paid into it.

Why my daughter did not think of that before as I she used one years back before she got a bank account...would have saved a lot of stress.

All is sorted now and he began his new job over a week ago...ahhh..peace reigns...for now!!!
Great news. Thanks for the update.
