>>>Went to this site Which one? There are loads! (e.g. forces-war-records.co.uk, myheritage.com, ancestry.co.uk, greatwar.co.uk, findmypast.co.uk, etc, etc). They'll all have different subscription schemes. The site officially recognised by the the National Archives is Ancestry. See here...

Go back to the website and look at their charges.
No idea, but depending on which records you are looking for you may be able to get from free sources. EG if grandad died in the war you can get free info (Commonwealth War Graves Commission) and his medal card should only cost £3.30 from Public Record office.

Ancestry charges £13.95 per month for Premium membership (which is the category you need to access military records) but there's also a 'pay as you go alternative', costing just £6.95 to access up to 12 records within a 14 day period:

I'm sure I read that ancestry were offering free searches for war record searches this month. Don't know how long for or whether you can download for free worth a try tho
Findmypast had a free weekend just gone.
