I intended to watch the football last evening I selected SKY Sports 5 only for a message to appear on the screen stating that I had to register to be able to watch this channel.I went through the on screen prompts clicked select and waited and waited the channel finally came on at 12.50 pm.Match Over.
Why are we subjected to register for this particular channel when with all the
channels we have from SKY this has never been necessary before.
We have had Sky for over 20 years.

Sky customers with Sky Sports are invited to activate Sky Sports 5 and register for two years’ free Sky Broadband Unlimited now - visit www.skysports.com/5 for more information.

The two years’ free broadband offer is available to UK customers only (excludes Republic of Ireland). Sky Line Rental is required at £15.40 a month. Opt-in not required by Sky Sports customers to access Sky Sports 5

I don't remember activating, It eventually just worked.
I keep turning on Sky 5 and get the message but I ignore it and just watch the matches
The reason for this is that Sky want to get people to interact with them so that they can tempt them into signing up to their broadband package.
But you DON'T of course need to sign up to the broadband package in order to get Sky Sports 5. Eventually, when the marketing drive ends, Sky Sports 5 will become available to everyone with the sports package.
Also Sky loses the Champions League games to BT for 3 years from next season and want to stop a mass exodus with the free 2 year broadband deal.
