My 4 year old grandson has speech difficulties. He can say a few words, ususally relating to food, but never more than 2 words in a sentence. He is getting therapy. Can anyone suggest a toy that could encourage him to communicate?

How about this?

His parents and you can go 'shopping' with him, 'buy' it then 'eat it', all the while trying to get him to tell you what each item is you're buying/eating.
What does your grandson show an interest in?
Anything that interests him could possibly get him talking.
Watch him closely and see what excites him.
Then work on that.

I've never met your grandson but I bet he is a wonderful young fellow.

All the best..
does he attempt speech happily? Does he make noise? You might ask the therapist what she suggests but there are toys which repeat what you say, here's an example

My son had glue ear which resulted in late speech development. When he started to speak at about four, he had so much he wanted to say he couldn't vet it all out. I found that if I sang to him he was better able to say more if he was singing. I.e. breath control. Use the music of his favourite songs even (is was the theme tune to the archers?) The more bouncy the better. Ie you sing - do you want a drink... he sings back - yes please. Make the sentences longer. Long term don't worry, children want to talk . Good luck don't worry. I am assuming that he can understand what you are saying
