"I said to Matteo Renzi that I was not the leader of some gang of bureaucrats," Mr Juncker said.

Really ?

"I am the president of the European Commission, a political institution, and I want prime ministers to respect these institutions."

Maybe the Commission needs to respect those that pay and not be dictators?

It is clear we will never see eye to eye. No doubt the pro EU brigade on here, who are usually the anti British brigade too will tell us we should all bow to the great EU.

Ja, natürlich mein Herr.

He is accusing Cameron and others of saying one thing in a private meeting, and another when addressing their electorates.
Because the meetings were in Private, it is impossible to call either way, whether that is true.
What we do know is that the EU set a timetable to bring the change in 2 years ago and the Government and the Conservative MEPs were part of the process.
We also know that the Givernment has been collecting the new economic data, on which our payment is worked out, for the past 12 months.
For Cameron to pretend the increase bill was a surprise or an ambush by the Eurocrats is a complete falacity.
The Government would have to be completely negligent to not know of the change and its implications to our payment. I think the Government is hopeless, but I do not believe that they do not know what is happening.
Cameron is using it to engage in some EU bashing because he knows it goes down well with his party and with potential UKIP voters who he needs to vote Conservative. But it is well known that Cameron is pro Europe and intends to Campaign for staying in, if there is a referendum.
Cammy is a Brussels Boy through and through. He will kowtow and pay the 1.7. He is only acting and talking all tough to TRY(and is failing)to stop voters flooding to UKIP. Too late Cammy. He's had nearly 5 years and now, at the 11th hour, he's acting as if he puts Britain first He does NOT. Never has, never will.
Well the 'pro EU brigade on here', aren't for cutting and running.

Anyone who thinks that not being frightened of and not retreating from overseas challenges is somehow 'anti British' clearly has a different idea of British characteristics to me.
I did not think we were in the EU to face its "challenges" Zeuhl. I thought it was supposed to be of great benefit to all mankind. "Challenges" for the UK seem to occur with alarming frequency and if we have to continually face them then we may as well cut and run.
