they encouraged immigration to drive down labour costs and break the unions.
Question Author
excellent Unions need to be broken.
(3T's finds himself in a quandry. Does he support unfettered immigation because it "breaks the unions"?)

on balance judge I think 's worth it!
During the Blair years, Labour was very much a Party of Business and not of the Unions.
It was business who wanted to tap this Eastern European pool of cheap labour, and Blair was keen to keep big business ( and their donations) so readily acceded to them.
It wasn't a deliberate Labour Policy, but it was one they went along with.

(It is clear that the 'Mail' are taking Mandelson's speech out of context, in a deliberate attempt to mislead its readers).
And just who is "filling us with immigrants" now?
Click http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-28964323 for a BBC News page.
“Net migration into the UK increased by more than 38% to 243,000 in 2013-14, government statisticians have said.”
That’s nearly a quarter of a million in one year. At that pace it wouldn’t take too long to reach the 2 million Labour allegedly brought in. And this from a Prime Minister who swore to reduce immigrants “from hundreds of thousands to tens of thousands”. How's that coming along, Dave?
Over 13 years Labour added 2.2million to net migration to the UK.

That works out at 169,000 a year.
The Conservative led current shower have this year added 243,000.

The message is clear, dump the Conservatives to lower net migration.
I take it from your attack on the Tories you want immigration stopped Gromit. I agree, lets get out of the EU now because that is where the big numbers are coming from caused by continual signing away of our powers by New Labour.
A seeming volte face from QM too. There's hope for us all. ;)
During the 13 years of Labour Net Migration increased 169,000 a year.

How are the Coalition fairing?

2010 252,000
2011 153,000
2012 176,000
2013 212,000
2013 243,000

If we ignore 2010 because Labour were in power for part of that year, the Coalition's average over the last 4 years is HIGHER than Labour's the previous 13.

Only in one year have they been lower.

No just lowered to pre-coalition levels.
If you believe that dumping the Conservatives will result in lower net migration you must be away with the fairies, Gromit. One reason it may reduce if Labour are elected is because large numbers of people will up sticks and leave, hence demonstrating the deceitful nature of “net” migration, but that's another argument.

However, since we are principally talking about immigration only here (which is what the government should do) it matters not which party or parties are in power. Whilst we are members of the EU immigration from the Union will continue and it will almost certainly increase. Almost 50% of migrants arriving in the UK are from EU countries and, unlike the rest of the world, that migration is uncontrollable; no UK government can do a thing about it. There is only one thing that will bring about any meaningful reduction in immigration and that is for the UK to leave the EU.
"the minority of EU and non-EU migrants who come to scrounge, steal or push drugs."

the vast majority came/come here for the benefits etc, as have the vast majority of non eu immigrants over the past 50 or so years
"the vast majority came/come here for the benefits etc, as have the vast majority of non eu immigrants over the past 50 or so years"

Unsupported propaganda.
Volte face? From what to what?
