What should I be looking for when buying untreated bark chippings?

It sounds like a daft question but when I go to the garden centre the bags don't make it entirely clear if they have been treated in any way? And as it is for an animal run I want to be 100% sure the chippings are unadulterated.

Or am I looking in the wrong place by going to the garden centre?

yes, I think you need to look elsewhere. If you google organic bark chippings, there are quite a few options. What's the animal?
Bark chippings attract wood lice in my experience.
Have a chat with a tree surgeon or landscape gardener, they always have plenty.

Grrrr......pesky iPads.

Thanks Woof, I'll do some Google noodling.

It is for chooks so woodlice is a bonus for them.

I've already visited the sawmill and they have fresh and harsh wood chip, I want something a bit more rotted down.

If you know of a place that sells landscaping materials, such as stone work, turf, fencing etc, in your area, they may also sell bark chips or wood chip.

Stuff thats been stacked a while is usually darker, stopped steaming and has little smell.

Thanks Chipchopper, I'll look into that option.
