What can I use to fix a ceramic plaque to a stone wall? It's quite small so not much weight is involved. I want to avoid drilling holes in the plaque. Suggestions gratefully received.

There are lots of adhesives you can use with a cartridge gun but silicon will work Think you buy small tubes if you don,t have gun. Normally used for resealing around bath
God I thought he wrote Ceramic PLAGUE

sort of like - pottery Ebola - only it is outside in the gaaaarden !
Would mirror fixings be a possibility, rabet. Fixed to the wall by screws hidden by the plaque ?

This would depend on the depth of the plaque.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Invisible-Disc-Plate-Hangers-100mm/dp/B001LQLDRQ Quite a lot comes up if you google plate hangers. Is it for indoors?
When you say "stone wall" I envision lots of irregularities in it: bumps, hollows, etc. Keep in mind that if you are going to use some type of adhesive, the wall and the plate have to come into direct contact with each other over a large surface area in order for the adhesive to work.
No Nails, from hardware stores
I just used an ordinary adhesive to put my house number on the wall. That was MANY years ago and it's still holding strong. Good luck rabet. There are plenty of really good and very strong adhesives on the market.
Further to what I posted above, some plates/plaques have a circular ridge on the bottom, so you have to consider that when using adhesives.
I'd go for the wire plate hangers (the type that clasp round the plate), loads on amazon and no worries about adhesive etc wearing out and the plate smashing to the floor!
