Why are people allowed to blatantly plug their books on the BBC .

Regularily on BBC breakfast they will have a guest at the end of the programme and 95% of the time that person will just have had a book published .

It's almost embarrising to hear them constantly referring to ' my book '
' in my book , the ...... '

There is one particular radio 4 programme , where all the guests on it have recently had books published

Why are the the publishers allowed this free advertising ?

Celebrities (or, more accurately, their agents) normally charge several thousand pounds for a radio or TV interview, so the BBC (and other broadcasters) rarely have the money for such interviews. The only time that celebs will appear for free is when, in lieu of payment, they're allowed to promote their book, film, album, etc.

I would have thought that celebrities would be more than happy to appear free on national tv , just to keep themselves in the public eye
Most of them only want to be in the public eye when they have something to promote.
Have you seen this? Refreshingly , not your archetypal book interview :-)
