a man I know did a bet on three horses, all won 9/2 9/2 11/2 ok but he wanted a 4 pound treble he wrote out the docket correct in horse names time of races. He did not write 4 treble on docket but did fill 4.00 in little box provided for customer to put total stake .When he went up to the desk he was told that the bet could not be paid out on a treble and they would pay out on a Trixi a difference of 700 quid .was this right any ideas

I thought a Trixie was three doubles and a treble!
^ it is.
Looks like 3 x £1 doubles a £1 treble
Question Author
yeah 3 doubles and a treble ,but then why decide on that bet to pay out if 4 pound was staked would it not suggest 4 pound on 3 horses making it a treble.
He is very lucky they paid him anything.I would have thought it was a void bet and stake returned as no bet was actually written.
Question Author
yes agree, but should it not have been checked before giving him his copy of the wager
I think it was harsh, but you have to state what you mean
I would have thought that with no bet instructions written down it should have been settled as a treble

I guess it depends on that particular bookies rules
The bookie has to cover himself. What if, for example, only one horse won. What's to stop your mate saying he wanted 3X £1 singles and a £1 treble? Or if two won, he could have claimed he meant 3X £1 doubles and a £1 treble. Both parties in the wrong IMO. No instruction = void bet would be my ruling.
Rules is Rules
your mate might be honest but there's more 'trying things on' in the bookies than Chelsea Girl (not that I've ever been in one) (CG that is, been in loads of bookies)
All bookies have rules to cover these circumstances. Your pal needs to examine them to see if they have been applied properly.
In that situation the trixie had a higher chance of winning somthing than the accumulator. If only 2 horses had won he would have been paid out. If unstated and unclear with multiple bets they default to the one with the most bets. It would say that in the rules somewhere. For example if he wrote down 4 horses and staked £11 then they would have assumed it was a yankee rather than an accumulator. Sounds like this guy is trying to cover both angles here and comming unstuck.
Is your mate a regular at that particular bookies and does he back trebles as a rule. If yes to both, he could perhaps appeal to their better nature - yes, even bookies have those! Some years back, i used to do two football bets on a Saturday; a patent with 3 selected teams to win 2-1 and another with 3 selected games to end 2-2. On the only occasion i managed to get all 3 correct in one bet, i noticed that i had omitted to write 2-2 beside one of the games. However, because i had been using the bookies for a number of years and those behind the glass knew what bets i put on, i was paid in full. And that was a difference of about £400 back in the 90s. If your mate is not a regular, then, as has already been suggested, he should thank his lucky stars to have received anything other than his stake money.
